The second Kelham Island CX (KICX) is going to be filled with fast paced racing and a great atmosphere. The course at Kelham will be full of twists and turns as it speeds around and through Kelham Island Museum.
The day will comprise of 6 categories, 6-11 juniors, 12-16 juniors, Amateur men, Women, Sport Men and Mens Vets categories. Each category will have 24 riders, riding in 2 rounds, the top 6 riders from each round then go through to the final round. The day starts with the 6-11 juniors category at 10.00 and the day ends with the Men’s Vets @ 16.20
There will be ‘spectator areas’ to view the action and also spots along the course. Bring your best heckling voice and noise makers (that includes kids, cowbells, trumpets or anything else).
Our sponsors and supporters including Love to Ride, Polaris Bikewear and Velotastic will also be on hand to talk to and have information and product on display.
Travelling to KICX
If you are driving down to watch the KICX race on May the 5th then there are a number of parking options in the Kelham Island area. We have tried to list as many car parks as we can in the area, however there is also capacity for on-street parking. The Kelham Island area is also easy to reach by public transport and there are super tram links from Sheffield City centre that will drop you off at Shalesmoor for a short walk to Kelham Island Museum. Below are some links to timetables and useful resources to help you plan your day
Grab an OFO
Ofo is Sheffield’s dockless bike scheme. You can pick an Ofo bike up in the town centre, bright yellow, so they are easy to spot! Download the Ofo App and follow the instructions to start your journey. Ofo will be joining us on the 5th so if you are ‘Ofo curious’ then here’s your chance to have all your questions answered.
Car parks
The Kelham Island area is in the middle of an exciting period of redevelopment, as a result there are a number of ‘temporary’ carparks that have emerged. These vary in length of stay and price,
- Russell Street and Bowling Green Street, (postcode S3 8RW), near kelham Island Tavern
- Rcp Parking, 53 Bridge St, Sheffield S3 8NS
- Q-Park Riverside House, 1 Millsands, Sheffield S3 8NH
Public transport
From the city centre you can catch the SuperTram from the Cathedral or West Street. The Stagecoach website has information on times and stops. You can also download a tramstop map. You will need the Shalesmoor stop for Kelham.
Get on your bike!
Cycling down is also a good way to come and see the race. There are a number of places to lock your bike up near the top end of the Kelham Island, spectators can then walk down to the course.
Please note: The above are suggestions to help you plan your day. Sheffield Urban CX accepts no responsibility for loss or damage to personal property as a result of these suggestions.
Foodie paradise
There is quite a bit to do down at Kelham Island. Craft & Dough is a fantastic place to grab a hand made pizza and a drink. Kelham is home to some of Sheffield’s finest independent cafe’s and bars as well. The weekend of the 5th of May is also the date for the monthly Pedller Market over on Burton Road (S3 8DA). This is a great event for foodies, a great atmosphere and a host of street food stalls, craft beers, live music and art. so why not include a trip over during your visit to KICX in between races.

Kelham Island Ale Trail
Industrial Kelham Island is a place where contrasts sit harmoniously side by side. Warehouses, factories and workshops left vacant following the demise of the steel industry are now being taken over by residential developments, small businesses and artists. And amidst all that, is the best real ale trail in the city – if not the world. Find out more about the trail on ‘The Outdoor City’ website. Or pick up a map from the KICX registration area.

Take a walk through ‘The outdoor City’s’ industrial past
The River Don winds through Kelham and there is an optimistic vibe to the area. Our friends over at Sheffield website ‘Our Favourite Places’ have written a great article that sums up how much is going on in this small, vibrant area of Sheffield.

Kelham is one of Sheffield Urban CX’s favourite Sheffield spots, we have loved exploring it, we hope that you do to.
